Hey everyone! Welcome to my Indie Game Devlog. I’m excited to share the creation of my main character Zara. This is the first iteration of Zara, over the project she will have many iterations.
The game I’m working on is a new VR project. I love 3rd person games and want to translate that into a VR experience. I’ve done this in the past with Ray The Robot but this time I want to make a commercial VR game inspired by Zelda, Dark Souls, Half Life 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Oh damn, I see now that this video is old so you may have moved on with how you make characters. You said that you like to use models from the asset store or generate one from Blender 1:11. Have you heard of a program called Make Human? http://www.makehumancommunity.org/ it is a Blender addon that the creators made into its own program to create Human models using sliders to control facial and body feature much like you would see in RPG's like Skyrim where you can customize your characters. You can take these models and export them into many different formats, bring them into Blender and animate them there.

it took me about 2-3 hours to animate a sword unsheathing, granted it was my first time animating a 3d model but it really is a lot of polishing up in the process its actually quite fun. I did the motion about 50 times in real life and tried to notice when certain parts of my body would move and was a little struggle to get everything moving at the same time. On the other hand ive tried to learn 3d modeling in blender for so long now and i usually just get some deformed cube monstrosity which randomly gets a bunch of cuts in it, i quit and come back months later but i just cant 🙁

Is it worth to buy substance painter for indie game developer?
no
if you have maya than you can use a free script called advance skeleton or the free inbuilt auto rig function , the free inbuilt one works wonderfully for games trust me .

Her running animation looks weird. A person running doesn't flung her arms slowly, when you run fast or sprint, you swing your arms fast and tilt in the direction of the run. Get more context and work on it to make it perfect 😀

The Character looks a little slippy on the ground, the speed needs to be synced up with the Animation speed a little bit better. Other than that nice video.

Make your character advancing faster with your walking animation because its not synch. Otherwise its very good

It's looking great. One thing that you didnt cover was how you got the cloth and hair animations working? It went from static to dynamic. Could you briefly let me know how you did this?

The animation blending part is really interesting but the character seems a bit floaty with the animation running faster than the characters movement.

I have a some criticism to make right here:
-The game is still improvable in characters, you could add more NPC
– You could put in kickstarter.
– I like the environment a bit yet it could have more graphic detail and that is quite important for players
-Audio could be more fitting and even different styles: (For this one you can just tell me, give me your e-mail to send you a pack of 70 songs and SFX, mines is pedrotranslations777@hotmail.com) 20$ should be ok for that on paypal.

You said you exported the character but as I know ue4 triangulates the mesh how did you manage to get this mesh out of ue4 without triangulation?
