UPDATED TUTORIAL:

In this tutorial, I show you the PROPER way to replace the save batteries in your Gameboy and Gameboy Color game cartridges. There’s a lot of misinformation and just plain awful so-called “tutorials” out there for this process already, so I decided to do my own and set the record straight once and for all.

I’ve got A LOT more Gameboy stuff on the way! 🙂 I just needed to get this tutorial out of the way first. Enjoy, and let me know what you think!

Hey all, check out my updated version of this tutorial here: https://youtu.be/NyEXRXeuA5w After reviewing my old video and giving it some thought, I've decided to redo it and give some better instruction, as well as correct my mistakes from THIS video. Cheers, and thanks for watching! 🙂

But what if you want to replace a battery before it dies to save the progress?

The battery for my gba game (Pokémon Emerald) still works but I can’t do anytime events like the Shoal Cave & grow berries. Would it still be ok to replace the battery for doing time base events? Are there ways of preserving the save file even with the battery change to?

I would do this. But I don't have any of these things. I just did it with a knife without ridges. And it works fine soooo

Thank you sir, you just made a new subscriber. I backed up the save files for all my Pokémon games with BennVenn’s Joey after finding out about it thanks to one of your videos and now replaced all their batteries after watching this one. I was so nervous since I had never soldiered anything.

And Pokemon silver gold and crystal battery’s will run out faster than red blue and yellow just so everyone knows pretty sure it’s because of the clock and real time event in those games

i mean…i tend to see lots of tutorials on replacing the battery…and good job on this tutorial as well…but it does not solve the main issue that people have…which is making your old save data work again…and there is actually no method to recover your old save data…for example if i complete a game and the battery dies, you can do this tutorial, replace it and then complete the game again, however if you put in a lot of work on that one save file…you might as well just not play at all…because its too much work that you've put into in that one save file…pokemon is a great example, and most of that work you just cannot replicate, like transferring pokemons from one game to another etc.

When my 2nd gen pokemon game battery died, I was able to use my save file but the clock was disabled. Or am I thinking of the 3rd gen that happened? Does Ruby and Sapphire have a battery in it? If it does, then maybe that was what I'm thinking of. I just remember the clock not working anymore but still able to play it.

If this is the RIGHT way you have been used desoldering braid & especially flux. Good enough either way.
